UNM Health Sciences Building Roof Garden - Albuquerque, NM.
Completed while employed at Sites Southwest LLC. (Landscape Designer/Construction Oversight)

The UNM HCS Roof Planter Project was designed to resolve persistent roof leaks at the University of New Mexico’s Health Science Center. Previous roof liner repairs failed during major storms, prompting a redesign that maintained the desired tree and shrub plantings while preventing irrigation water from seeping into the roof. A major challenge arose from unknown subsurface conditions below the planter and roof deck, complicating both design and construction. As excavation revealed unforeseen constraints, the original plan required modification. The closed drainage system needed significant depth, but limited clearance risked compromising the roof. To address this, the team created a closed drainage system using large PVC stock tanks as plant containers with bottom drains to redirect excess water away from the plaza. To reduce overall weight, some plant volume was replaced with oxidized steel structures and a shade canopy for vines, enhancing aesthetics while limiting load. A sealed oxidized steel finish prevented rust, and a decorative boulder was integrated for unique seating and visual interest.
